Weekly Report – Thursday, 19th September 2019 – by Len Weir

Ayrshire Chess Championships Marine Hotel Troon

First round Monday 30th September (6 rounds monthly to March)

So far we have four entrants Bob Reid, Mike Chapman, Cameron Smith and Len Weir. Can we have more please.

Last evening we made the draw for the first two rounds of the Coronelli Trophy. Real tasty ties were headed by Phil Thomas to play Tommy Barrett in the second round. There are 8 players who will compete in the first round. The four winners will join the twelve who had byes in the second round. The complete draw is on the web site as with the Gold and Silver Championships. By way of explanation the Bronze shall be decided from the six lowest graded players who compete in the Silver and have the best results.

In the Gold , the reigning champion, Tommy Barrett retained his 100% record with a win over a certain L Weir. I tried to hunker down behind a variation of the Sicilian with which Tommy was unfamiliar, but eventually his class shone through. Another maximum 2 points from 2 games was achieved by our President, Cameron Smith who seems to be relishing the responsibility and created a nice checkmate to finalise a close struggle against John Shankland.

The Silver had a resolute Alex Smith proving too much for Ross Duffy who stuck to his guns until Alex pushed his way into the defence. Sanabel played her first competitive game against Sandy but it was no fairy tale start for our Syrian princess.

All the results and fixtures are on the web site and i am happy with the progress through September. Can you please look at your opponents for October and the Coronelli as things start to get crowded as the League season begins.

Get Caught In Cameron’s Web!

Ayrshire Champs new Venue!

Champ lays down the law

‘What’s the time ,Frank ??

Cameron has done a super job with the new website. Let him know how clever he is by clicking on troonchess.co.uk . This represents a lot of work and he is grateful for any news of a chess nature etc. The Weekly news will have regular appearances there with up-dates for all the competitions.

The Ayrshire Chess Championships take place from Monday 30th September at the Marine Hotel.

I managed to keep the champs in Troon and arranged the venue which is top rate. We are getting it at a ridiculously low rate but need a positive entry for this idea to work. My entry is in and I hope there is company from Troon players.

Sandy Gibson has got the Junior Club up and running and we had 4 youngsters last evening. I hope to introduce another two next week.

Gold Championship :- Tommy Barrett kicked off his campaign in determined fashion with a win over John Calder repeating their jousts of last year. Cameron Smith reflected the imagination he showed in the construction of the web site against a certain L Weir who eventually blundered to give Cameron a well deserved win. In a well matched face off Peaky Blinders, Clive Baird and Duncan Malcolm matched sartorial style and chess skill with Clive just edging the victory.

n.b. The ties for October are on the web and can be played when suitable to both players

Silver Championship:- Jack Barrett proved to be taking a step in forward development when he faced the stern features of Bob Reid and gained a worthy draw. In the other Silver game Frank Park and David Ferguson went ‘clock crazy’ as they headed toward time limits and Frank’s flag fell giving David the win.

n.b. The ties for October are on the web and can be played when suitable to both players

Ross Duffy, who has just been promoted ,shot to the top of the Salver after his win over joint promotee Andrew Brown. Sandy Gibson had a good draw against Phil Thomas

OFP Salver Opening for September (2019) – Lewis Gambit

Weekly Report – Wednesday, 4th September 2019 – by Len Weir

First competitive chess for a while saw Mike Chapman prove his unbeaten status in last season’s Silver Championship was no fluke as he held Duncan Malcolm to a draw. The other Championship tie ended in a win for the in-form Phil Thomas against John Shankland to add to his quick play competition success. Maybe he is posting a warning for the games ahead.

Moving to the Silver Championship Frank Park stated his intentions with a win over Bronze Champion Richard McMinn and Alex Smith had a good victory against David Ferguson while in the battle of the ‘new boys’ Ross Duffy showed friendship has its limits with a win over Andrew Brown.

Don’t forget if you have no championship game you can play in the OFP Salver using the opening of the month. Cameron and Sandy did and Cameron streaked into the lead with two victories against Sandy who excel in fast game

Please get your name down for the Ayrshire Individual Championships held at the Marine Hotel in Troon starting on 30th September. Please note the dates for this tournament are all Mondays. The accommodation is superb and I’m sure you will enjoy the experience,

This tournament has been played at the Railway Club for many years now but Handicap access is now compulsory so I am happy the event is at least in Troon

Ties For Wednesday 11th Sept:-

Gold; Tommy Barrett v John Calder

Len Weir v Cameron Smith

Duncan Malcolm v Clive Baird

Silver:-

Jack Barrett v Bob Reid

Sanabel Dawod v Sandy Gibson

The draw will be made for the Coronelli Trophy this Wednesday
